Social Media and Being Yourself

I taught a class yesterday for my Broker. He had asked me to come into his coaching group and spend an hour with them showing them the ropes of Social Media. I always enjoy these opportunities to open other people’s eyes to what’s out there. The students usually end up with a glossy deer in the headlights look and leave with more questions than they had coming into it. I think that’s a sign you did your job as an instructor, when the students eyes and minds are opened up to the possibilities.

It’s interesting to me that they all seem to want to know the same thing: What’s the secret recipe to doing this thing called Social Media? My answer is always the same – Just be yourself and figure out what works for you. There is no magic formula, no sure-fire method, nothing, nada, zip!

Chris Brogan explained Social Media best in his book Trust Agents when he said that “Social Media extends human relationships”. If all we are doing is extending our relationships then why on earth would you want to be different and follow some formula/recipe requiring you to not be who you really are?

Now that’s not to say that there aren’t a whole list of things you shouldn’t do with Social Media. I’m not going to go into that list in the post. All I am going to say is jump in with both feet and be yourself. To steal from Nike – “Just Do It!” Stop waiting for the perfect moment, or for you to have a perfect knowledge of all the platforms and the “ins and outs” of it all.

Believe it or not there is someone who has attended three of my classes now, and yet they still haven’t jumped in and just done it! They are waiting until they understand it all! I have learned the most by just doing. More importantly, Social Media is changing so rapidly, that the best way to learn it and keep up with it is by just doing it!
