How Do You Tell Someone They’re Doing it Wrong?

The other day I received a request in the open Twitter stream. The request was simple enough, “Please +K my influence in Real Estate on @Klout”. I did not recognize the user, which makes sense as they had just recently followed me and we had not engaged each other at all, until of course this tweet hit my mention column.

I didn’t think much of this until I dug a little further and discovered this:

Klout fail

That is just what I could fit on one screen! This person spent two hours making the same request of practically everyone they were following on Twitter.

My next reaction was how do I tell this person they are going about it all wrong, and how do I do it and not be “that guy”? Sadly, I chose the easy course and just ignored the sordid mess.

Later I discovered this exchange:

Twitter fail

Could I have helped this person avoid this interaction? Probably not, as the damage had already been done. Should I have helped this person with a more kind response than “are you kiddin me” like the other person did? Probably yes…

Social media is a shared space where we can collaborate, communicate and engage with each other. I wouldn’t be where I am today if some great people didn’t reach back and help me understand some basics of what I should or shouldn’t be doing in this sandbox. While it’s not right to tell someone what they should or should not be saying, it is our job to help others avoid the pitfalls of the basic dos and don’ts…

I’d love to hear how you would have reached out to help this Twitter neophyte…
