When Planning and Zoning Run A Muck!

As many of you know I am a Realtor at Prudential Utah Elite Real Estate. Prudential’s logo for as long as I can remember has been the famous Rock of Gibraltar. I am embarrassed to say as a Geography major I didn’t even know that it’s a sovereign territory of the United Kingdom and not part of Spain. I am however aware of it’s great strategic value and invincibility in several wars, hence the “solid as a rock” saying. BTW shameless plug…Prudential is solid as a rock!

Now to what this post was really about – The airport at Gibraltar! Now I’ve been known to complain a time or two about various planning and zoning issues that I encounter in my day to day job as a Realtor. But nothing…and I mean nothing compares to this airport!

Yes that is an airport running across the isthmus and into the harbor. Now look closer…right about the middle of the runway…that’s the one and only road from mainland Spain over the isthmus into the city. Here’s a better shot…

Now you think someone at some point would have said wait a second…cars driving across a runway at an airport…NOT A GOOD IDEA. I mean even some of the city councils I’ve dealt with wouldn’t have done this! You’d think they would have built a tunnel under the airport or something…

Here’s another shot to give you a real feel for what airplanes and motorists are dealing with here! Can you imagines someone running a red light? Now in fairness to the planning and zoning commission in Gibraltar, they don’t have a whole lot to work with land wise (see map below). But still, ever heard of a tunnel??

Mostly I am just having some fun with this blog post. But I do vow two things as a result of this post – 1. I will complain less about planning and zoning here in Utah County 2. I gotta go see this for myself one day! Recently this airport was featured in a TV show about the 10 most dangerous airports in the world.

Really guys…mix in a tunnel!
